It is race day in Hootenhollow, and Granny Hoot opens today's story, Tamkin's Too-Fast Race, from her balcony. Tamkin boasts that he is the fastest in Hootenhollow. When Bimble asks if he can race too, Tamkin teases that he is sooo slow. Bimble just smiles and says, "Slow and steady, friends!" Lila rings a tiny golden bell and says everybody can race, Fenna shows off the path she built, and Wobble gets a basket of petals to throw at the finish.

At the bell, Tamkin zooms off. He teeters across the stepping stones, drops his strawberry, slides into a mud puddle, zooms the wrong way into the sunflowers, and finally dives into the pumpkin tunnel and gets stuck, legs kicking. Bimble, carefully carrying his own strawberry, is almost at the finish when he sees Tamkin's wiggling legs. He stops, smiles kindly and pulls him out with a one, two, three. "Friends are more important than winning," Bimble says.

Tamkin says sorry for calling him slow, and the two walk through the ribbon at the very same moment. Fenna cheers, "You BOTH win!" while Wobble tosses petals, and Bimble shares half of his clean strawberry. Tamkin and Lila sing Slow and Steady. Little ones can learn that being fast is fun, but being careful and kind is even better.
